Three shops, two generations, and a week in Lincoln

Tali and Jay have donated £250 towards sending 28 of our Scouts to Poacher 2026, the international Scout and Guide jamboree held from 1 to 8 August at the Lincolnshire Showground. Organisers reported 10,700 people on site across the week, including 7,500 young participants from 20 countries.

If you live in Maltby you’ll know their work even if you don’t know their names. Tali and Jay are the brothers behind Morrell Street Store, Five Rivers Fish and Chip Shop, and Five Rivers Bar and Grill. Their family has been serving this town for at least two generations, which is long enough to have fed most of the people reading this.

The £250 went towards bringing the cost down for every one of the 28, rather than covering a single place. That matters more than the number suggests. A jamboree place costs real money, and every pound raised locally is a pound a family doesn’t have to find. We want the answer to “can my child go?” to be yes, whatever else is happening at home.

What that money helped buy was a week our Scouts will be talking about for years. They camped alongside young people from across the world, made friends they’d never have met in Maltby, and came home with the kind of stories that don’t fade. Poacher only comes round every four years, so most Scouts get one shot at it. Ours got theirs.

We’re a volunteer group serving over 150 children, young people and families in Maltby, and we don’t have a budget line for trips like this. What we have is people like Tali and Jay who look at their town, see something worth backing, and back it.

Behind the bar at Five Rivers Bar and Grill, one of three Maltby businesses the family runs.

So next time you’re picking up milk on Morrell Street or a Friday tea from Five Rivers, you’re spending with a family who put money back into Maltby’s young people. That’s worth saying out loud.

Thank you both, from all 28 of them.
